LXE VX3XPlus

Rugged "open book" fixed-mount computer now with two new display options
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The VX3 series includes a variety of "open book" style rugged fixed-mount PCs for use in mobile or vehicle-mount applications. Like most devices with the 640 x 240 wide screen, the VX3's design goes back to the era of Windows CE-based handheld PCs, but LXE is keeping the product technologically up-to-date, most recently with the addition of 802.11b/g WiFi and the availability of Windows CE 5.0. While lesser versions in then VX3 line use older processors and have less memory, the top-of-the-line MX3X has a powerful 400 MHZ Intel PXA255, plenty of RAM and flash, and excellent expandability via a PC Card and a CF card slot.

The device is large enough to have plenty of onboard connectivity, and that can be enhanced/customized with LXE's "end-cap" scanner and communications options. The MX3X is for those who like this form factor better than flashlights or PDAs, but don't want to give up the power of a modern handheld. The VX3XPlus attaches firmly to forklifts, pallet jacks, carts, straddle carriers and other vehicles via a versatile RAM Mount mounting system.

The VX3X platform is extremely rugged thanks to its sturdy polycarbonate/ABS housing, IP66 sealing, and wide 14 to 122 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range. The device uses an internal and fully isolated 12-80 VDC power supply.

In June of 2008, LXE introduced the VX3XPlus. It is built on the VX3X platform, but offers a much brighter indoor version of the half-VGA 640 x 240 pixel display as well. At 350 nits, it is five times brighter than the older color displays used in the VX3X. A new sunlight-readable color display uses transflective LCD technology.

LXE describes the VX3XPlus as a multimodal device that is "voice-ready" out of the box, using LXE's ToughTalk™ voice recognition technology.
