GETAC E100

Lightweight Rugged Tablet PC
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

In January of 2008, GETAC announced the rugged but very compact and ultra-lightweight GETAC E100 Tablet PC slate to its growing lineup of versatile rugged mobile computers. Debuting at DistribuTECH 2008 Conference & Exhibition at the Tampa Convention Center, the E100 will be commercially available in March 2008.

Weighing just over three pounds -- among the lightest rugged tablets available -- the E100 was designed for field service and customer service applications. Though it is small (11.1 x 7.2 x 1.26 inches), the GETAC E100 with its full magnesium housing and rubber bumpers is as tough as the heavyweights in GETAC's lineup. It is tested to MIL-STD-810F standards and carries an IP54 ingress protection rating. IP54 means it is dust-proof and can handle water spray from all directions.

The E100's 8.4-inch TFT SVGA (800 x 600 pixel) transmissive display has a touch screen panel. Optionally available is a sunlight-readable display with very strong 800 Nit backlight. Also available is an array of expandable "mission boxes" for customized market applications that use RFID, barcode and magnetic strip readers or digital cameras.

The E100 is powered by an 800MHz Intel A110 processor that is part of the Intel Ultra Mobile Platform 2007. The ultra low-power A110 has a 400 MHz front side bus, is based on Intel's Pentium M processor architecture, and is paired with the Intel 945GU Express Chipset. The E100 comes standard with 512MB of DDR2 DRAM, upgradeable to 1GB. Shock-resistant hard disks are 60, 80 or 100GB. Battery life is up to five hours.

The E100 comes with 802.11a/b/g WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0. EV-DO and GPRS/EDGE wide area network radios and integrated GPS are optionally available. The unit has a PC Card Type II or Express Card slot, a Smart Card reader, two USB ports, audio in/out, and uses the TPM v1.2 security module.

As is, the E100 runs either Windows XP Professional or the XP Tablet PC Edition.

Data entry is either via stylus/onscreen keyboard or through an integrated alphanumeric phone-style keypad. There is a 4-way navigation disc
