Two Technologies Safari

Rugged handheld computer for a wide variety of indoor/outdoor applications
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

Two Technologies, headquartered in Horsham, PA, has been designing and manufacturing customizable, rugged handheld computer and terminal products for industrial and commercial applications for over 20 years. With over 400 GEM partners, 4,000 customers and over a million products in the field, their computers and terminals can be found in a multitude of different applications and fields.

In December of 2008, Two Technologies introduced the rugged Safari handheld computer designed for a broad range of outdoor and indoor applications where durability and flexible operations are mandatory. The Safari is a fairly compact handheald with a footprint of 3.25 x 6.1 inches, a thickness of 1.22 inches, and a weight of 14 ounces with the standard battery installed. Its housing is made of Cycoloy, a ABS/Polycarbonate plastic blend.

The Safari runs Windows CE .NET 5.0 on a 520MHz Marvell PXA270 processor. It comes with a standard configuration of 128MB of SDRAM and 128MB of Flash. There is a SD Card slot for memory expansion and a SIM card slot for use with the optional GSM/GPRS/EDGE module. The SD sot is memory only and cannot be used for SDIO cards.

The Safari's display is a standard 240 x 320 pixel color TFT with LED backlight. It measures 3.5 inches diagonally and has a 4-wire resistive touch screen.

The unit is available either with a 28-key or a 41-key keypad, both available with optional LED backlight for the keys. The 28-key keypad has a numeric phone-style layout whereas the 41-key keypad has a full alphanumeric layout. There are also a number of programmable function keys. Custom key graphics are available, and can help reduce the learning curve with complex applications.

The Safari carries IP65 sealing, where the "6" stands for total protection against dust penetration, and the "5" for protection against low pressure jets of water from all directions. The device can survive drops from five feet to concreete and handle operating temperatures from 14 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fr data capture, the 2T Safari has an integrated barcode scanner that can read most 1D barcode symbologies, such as Codabar, Code 11/39/93/128, Interleaved 2 of 5, UPC/EAN, RSS-14, Industrial 2 of 5, Matrix 2 of 5, and more. 2T also offers an optional 13.56MHz RFID module.

The standard battery packs 16.3 watt-hours. If that is not enough, there is an optional high capacity 29.6 watt-hour battery. The picture to the right shows the Safari with the optional RFID reader and the extended battery.

With its rugged design, long battery life and customizable keypads, the Safari is perfectly suited for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor applications including law enforcement (meter reading/traffic), agriculture, environmental/testing, security, medical/hospital, hospitality and many more.
