Datalogic Formula
Pocket-sized laser scanning terminal
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)
The Datalogic Formula is a very small laser scanner measuring just 6 x 2.2 inches and weighing a minuscule 7.3 ounces. It's designed for a variety of scanning applications such as inventory, shelf replenishment, order entry, asset tracking, price management, etc. The device is based on a non-specified 8-bit processor, runs a proprietary Datalogic operating system, and has a small display that can show 16 lines by 16 characters.
Don't be fooled by what seems like a throwback to the olden days of proprietary data terminals. The Formula is a thoroughly modern device with a user-accessible SD Card slot, integrated high-speed USB and a mini-USB connector, and optional Bluetooth Version 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate. Integrated RS232 serial is present as well.
The integrated Class 2 laser scanner can be used at distances ranging from two inches to about three feet. It reads a variety of codes, including EAN13, EAN128, UPC/A-E, 2/5 family, Code 128, Code 93, Code 2/7, 3/9 family, MSI, Delta A IBM, Codabar (NW7), PAKO, Zellweger, and Storagetek.
Despite its small size, the Datalogic Formula is very robust. It has an IP54 ingress protection rating, 4-foot drop resistance, and can handle operating temperatures between 32 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
The devices comes with some ready-to-use applications for inventory, code quantity and pocking. A software developer's toolkit and an EasyGen rapid application generaotr are also available.
