Datalogic Kyman

Rugged, versatile data capture handheld computer
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The Datalogic Kyman is a standard-sized handheld computer running Windows CE 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional on a 520 MHz Marvell XScale PXA270 processor. Measuring 3.5 x 9.3 x 2.2 inches without the optional pistol-grip handle, the Kyman has a 240 x 320 pixel QVGA display with touch screen, weighs about 1.2-1.4 pounds depending on configuration, provides either a 53-key full alphanumeric keuyppad or one with 36 numeric keys plus navigation keys, oth with backlight. This makes the Kyman ideal for rapid data entry for field service automation, pickup and delivery, route accounting, meter reading, warehousing management and similar.

The Kyman can be ordered with a variety of data capture options, including RFID HF-ISO, a 2D Imager, a standard laser or an extra long range laser, making the unit capable of reading and decoding a vast variety of symbologies. To make scanning easier, Datalogic equipped the Kyman with its patented "green spot" feedback that provides a "good read" green dot directly on the code.

The Kyman's wireless communication capabilities include Bluetooth and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi including the WPAA and WPA2 security protocols. Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) certification Version 3 allows access to all the advantages of the Cisco WLAN infrastructure. There is also a SIM card slot so the Kyman can support GSM/GPRS/EDGE voice and data communication.

Wired connectivity includes USB and 3-pin RS232 as well as Ethernet via cradle. Expansion is via a SD Card slot.

Like most Datalogic mobile computers, the Kyman is tough and rugged. It is sealed to IP64 specifications, which means it is dust-proof and can handle water spray from all directions. It can also withstand drops from six feet to concrete, and operates within an extraordinarily wide range of -4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Overall, the Kyman is a very rugged industrial handheld able to operate in extreme environmental conditions. It's a very flexible device that can be used for almost any type of data capture application. The availability of Windows Mobile 6.0 (introduced in June of 2008) enhances mobile communications, interoperability, development, and third party application compatibility.
