Rugged flashlight-style handheld
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The MC3000, introduced in 2005 and winner of the Pen Computing Editor's Choice award in that year, is a lightweight (under a pound), compact flashlight-style rugged mobile computer designed specifically for scan-intensive retail environments. Despite its small size, the MC3000 has a 320 x 320 color TFT (a mono LCD version is available) that is perfect for the Windows CE .NET 4.2 application development environment. Built around a state-of-the-art 520MHz Intel PXA270 processor, the MC3000 is a speedy performer. 28, 38, and 48-key keypads are available depending on intended use. There is also a SDIO slot and internal 802.11b/g wireless. The MC3000 comes either in a laser or an imager configuration which are slightly different in size and weight (and battery power). With impressive environmental specs, the handy and ergonomically designed MC3000 is perfect for light to medium industrial use.

The MC3000 went through several upgrade cycles and became available in several versions. OS platforms were upgraded as well, and the 3000 Series could either be ordered with Windows CE 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6.1. Data capture options include a 1D laser or a 2D imager. As of late 2009, Motorola has sold almost 3/4 million units, making the mid-range MC3000 platform one of the most popular rugged handhelds ever.
