Symbol PDT 8100

Rugged flashlight-style handheld
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

Another of Symbol's legacy handhelds, Symbol's PDT 8100 offers early Pocket PC functionality and power in a more conventional "flashlight" form factor. The device can be ordered with one of three different keyboard/keypad arrangements (28-key numeric; 37 or 47-key alphanumeric) that are optimized for different types of usage and data entry. Like the 2800 Series, the 8100 is available with either a gray-scale or a reflective color display. A variety of wireless options are available for both local (802.11b) and wide area networks (CDPD, GSM, GPRS). Bar code scanner and magnetic stripe reader options are also available. Because of its integrated keyboard and expansion slots, the 8100 is a bit larger and heavier than the 2800 Series. An IP54 rating and impressive operating temperature and drop specs make the 8100 a tough tool for the job.
