The tale of two lines of very similar industrial All-in-One computers with very different processors

Teguar is a catchy name, and an increasingly familiar one as the Charlotte, North Carolina, based company is a hard-charging, rapidly growing provider of industrial and medical computers.

Launched in 2010 by a Swiss native with years of experience in industrial computer systems, Teguar prides itself in combining American adaptability and technological leadership with Swiss precision, quality, and attention to detail. In this article we're comparing two lines of very elegant industrial All-in-One computers that share almost everything, except the processor. A minor thing? Not so much.

First, what are industrial All-In-One PCs? In the broadest sense they are panel computers — PCs that combine monitor and computing electronics in one shallow box that can be mounted in panels or numerous other ways. Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple and many others make All-In-Ones for home, business and the enterprise. But those are not tough and durable enough for many commercial and, even more so, for industrial applications.

Teguar saw a niche there, somewhere between an iMac and an industrial Panel PC. Something that's versatile, available in various sizes, tougher than consumer tech, and customizable to numerous markets via modular expansions. And that is what the company's TP-5940 line of fanless All-In-One computers are, general purpose workhorse computers that are sturdier, heavier and much better built than All-in-Ones designed for consumer markets.

The picture above shows the Intel "Elkhart Lake" Celeron-based 22-inch version of the TP-4840 line on the left, and the in concept and design very similar 18-inch version of the Intel "Tiger" Core i5-based TP-5940-18 on the right.

Are all industrial and vertical market All-in-One computer applications the same?

Initially, virtually all computers were a box and a monitor. Mainframes and minicomputers had their remote terminals. In offices and homes it was "towers" and monitors. Once components became smaller, screen and computer began being combined into just one units. Initially those were bulky, but with increasing miniaturization and new technologies (like replacing bulky hard drives with much smaller solid state storage), "All-in-Ones" became essentially became big monitors with the computer built-in.

Are all All-in-Ones more or less the same? In the home and in the office, pretty much. They vary mostly in screen size, Windows or MacOS, and enough memory, storage and speed to handle typical PC applications — office, browsing, media, maybe games. Industrial and vertical market All-in-Ones are very different. One size does not fit all, not in actual size, not in functionality, not in design and build, and not in interoperability and performance.

So what sets these industrial and vertical market All-in-Ones apart, and what sets these two lines of Teguar AIOs apart?

  • Build and ruggedness — Commercial and industrial grade equipment must be able to stand up to rougher and more demanding operating conditions than home and office equivalents. This means heavier, more durable rugged build.

  • Target industries — Different industries have different requirements. Some are indoors only, some outdoors or on the road. Environmental challenges vary. design and aesthetics vary. Connectivity varies.

  • Performance — Many industrial and vertical market applications are fairly routine and do not vary. Others are much more demanding and require a lot more computing power. One performance size does not fit all.

All of this represents a significant challenge to manufacturers of industrial computing equipment. Unlike home and office, no two industrial and vertical market setting and application is the same. Manufacturers must either specialize on certain markets, or offer different platforms for different markets. There are All-in-Ones, there are Panel PCs, there are Box PCs, there are rack-mounts and many other types. In terms of performance and capabilities, it's often possible to "stretch" a platform by offering various configurations (processors, memory, storage, ports, etc.). Other times it makes sense in optimizing lines for certain markets and applications. And that's what Teguar did by dividing a class and more or less common platform into the "economy" TP-4840 line and the "high performance" TP-5940 line.

The table below shows the Teguar TP-4840 and TP-5940 Series of fanless All-in-One systems as of Summer 2023:

The table above shows the major specs of the four available TP-4840 and three available TP-5940 models in these two lines of industrial All-in-One computers that look almost identical and also share much of their functionality, with one major difference — the processor. And one other difference; while 16, 18, and 22-inch models are available in both lines, a much smaller 10-inch version is only available in the TP-4840 series.

But now let's look at what these systems have to offer in terms of specs and functionality. As far as screen size and resolution go, these industrial systems are of modest size and should easily fit almost anywhere. Compared to the now very common 27-inch consumer and commercial display sizes (let alone the ever larger flatscreen TVs, even a 22-inch industrial All-in-One is quite compact. 16 and 18-inch versions have 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, perfectly adequate for the intended applications for this type of system.

The 22-inch models have full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, making for about the same pixel density as the smaller versions. The outlier is the small 10-inch model that has far higher 224 pixel density. Luminance of all models is between 200 and 250 nits, about the same as modern laptops, and best suited for indoors.

As has become the almost universal standard, all use the quick and effortless capacitive touch technology, and all but the small 10-inch version use the common 16:9 aspect ratio.

Despite the two lines using two very different processors, both are fanless designs with passive cooling. That means no potential unwanted fan noise and are movement, and also no dust clogging and reliability concerns inherent to mechanical fans. Fanless operation is made possible because of the excellent heat-dissipation properties of the aluminum die-cast housings of both lines.

Mass storage for all models comes in the form of a single M.2 2280 style solid state SATA storage module. Note, though, that the TP-5940 models have a second M.2 2280 slot whereas the TP-4480 models don't.

All models have external power supplies, with the same 19 Volt input voltage. Since these kinds of systems will be used in stationary deployments, there is no need for battery or wide voltage range input.

Despite the significant range in size, all (including the very small 10-inch version) systems have pretty much identical port arrangements: plenty of USB ports, including the very practical and ever more popular reversible Type-C plugs. All also come with legacy serial DB9 COM ports as well as RJ45 Ethernet LAN jacks.

Weight ranges from just 3.3 pounds for the 10-inch TP-4840-10, to 10, 15, and 17+ pounds for the larger systems, respectively. All have dual 2 watt speakers, VESA75 mounting screw hole patterns, and optional webcams, barcode readers, RFID, and SmartCard.

About processor selection

A few more thoughts about why Teguar would offer two very different processors in essentially the same All-in-One panel computer platform. That's not generally ever the case in consumer and enterprise PCs where customers may have a choice of CPU, but usually in the relatively narrow range -- economy-priced PCs come with lower-end processors, premium PCs with higher end componente, features and processing performance.

The answer lies in the inherently different nature of industrial or medical All-in-Ones and panel PCs compared to consumer PCs. Consumer PCs are general-purpose computers that may be used for myriads of different tasks, fron very basic to very complex. That's why one very rarely sees a consumer PC with an Intel Atom processor inside. Atom chips are reliable industry workhorses, but they'd frustrate consumers because they'd bog down whenever they are loaded down with tasks they were never designed to handle.

Vertical market computers — and especially panel PCs, kiosks, and the like — are very different.

Most are for narrowly defined tasks. That may be an elaborate menu system, information lookup, monitoring sensors or machinery, a human-machine interface, or similar tasks that are important but don't use much computing power. And since most such systems are used for just such tasks and nothing else, it makes no sense to spend money for more processing performance than the systems will ever need.

However, some may be used for much more demanding work that would slow down a low-end processor to a crawl. Examples are complex graphics tasks such as 3D modeling, AR applications, high-res imaging, or heavy-duty local processing. For that you'd need at least a higher-end laptop level processor. It can't too high, because then you'd run into thermal issues and the system will need a mechanical fan, and with that comes noise, potential unwanted or harmful air movement, potential clogging, and a potential point of failure.

And that's why Teguar is offering two very different processors for these panel computers. One low-end, low cost, without need for a fan, but still powerful enough to handle the vast gamut of typical panel and kiosk applications. And one much higher up in Intel's CPU lineup, a chip that's generally used in high-end mobile systems such as rugged laptops and tablets. One that generates considerably more heat, but still not enough to require a fan in enclosures that provide enough passive cooling, like heavy panel enclosures do.

Having that choice is important. On the surface it may be a choice between "cheap and slow" and "fast and expensive", but it's really much more than that. Both speed and cost are entirely relative. What's "cheap" can end up costing much more in terms of aggravation and lost productivity when it turns out that an application needed more performance than expected. And the extra cost of a "fast" option may turn out to have been entirely unnecessary when an application simply never needs that expensive performance.

The Teguar TP-5940-18 industrial computer

The Teguar TP-5940-18 is one of three available industrial All-in-One computers in this line. TP-5940s come in display sizes as small as 15.6 inches — a screen the size of that of a full-size laptop — and as large as 22-inches, the size of your average desktop PC screen. Teguar sent us the 18.5-inch middle version for evaluation and testing. Just as is the case with the TP-4840 Series, all three versions have the exact same tech inside, and also virtually the same wired and wireless connectivity.

Below is a look at the TP-5940-18 from the front and from all four sides:

Sporting the same elegant flush glass front bezel, the TP-5940-18 looks just like a small modern Windows All-in-One or desktop monitor. It's a structurally very strong and fairly heavy (15 pounds) industrial computer, but it wouldn't look out of place in a healthcare or hospitality setting. Even with its heavy-duty, high-quality materials and construction, the side view shows a slender display case barely just over an inch thick, and then the 5/8 of an inch bulge for the system box on the backside. The whole assembly is just 1.9 inches deep. The TP-5940-18 can be mounted just about anywhere, using the standard 75mm VESA screw hole pattern on its back that'll work with a vast universe of mounting hardware.

For materials and construction, the TP-5940 lines relies almost entirely on durable ADC12 die-cast aluminum with a glass front and just a slender steel rail to mount the interface ports on the back. ADC12 aluminum provides excellent resistance to cracking and it is very corrosion resistant. Manufacturers like it because the metal works well for all sorts of die-casting designs and it is easy to machine — a great choice both for customers and manufacturers.

When taking panel computers apart — or opening them — to add or remove memory, storage or communication modules, care has to be taken not to damage whatever cables there may be between the back and front of a system. That's no problem with any of the TP-5940 models; there's just a single wire between the front and back, the one that operates the on/off/sleep switch in the back. Separating the back and the front requires nothing more than unscrewing eight small Philips screws.

What's inside the TP-5940-18? It's nowhere near as packed as a modern laptop or consumer all-in-one. There is the motherboard that measures roughly 3-1/2 x 10 inches, a small power board, two speakers, a floating touch controller board, and that's about it.

All I/O is edged-mounted, with just some optional ports using cabling. Both the TP-4840 and TP-5940 series have a single SO-DIMM RAM connector on top of the motherboard. Unlike the TP-4840 models, however, the TP-5940 Series has two M.2 connectors for storage and one half-size half-size M.2 E-key connector, whereas the TP-4840 Series has just one M.2 slot for storage and one half-size half-size M.2 E-key connector.

Below is a look at the TP-5940-18's lineup of interface ports. They are in the back, all facing down. The port area is hidden underneath a black cast-aluminum cover that's held in place by a couple of screws. That makes for a neat appearance and keeps cables closer together and facing down.

While back in the day, point-of-sale systems often relied on glacially slow modem dial up to verify cars and log transactions, TA-5940 models are well equipped with all sorts of I/O.

On the image above, from left to right you can see:

  • An unused cutout for another optional COM port
  • An unused cutout for another optional RJ45 LAN port
  • Two legacy DB9 COM ports
  • Two USB 3.0 Type A ports
  • Two USB 3.0 Type-C data-only ports
  • Two USB 2.0 Type A ports (one hidden beneath the connection tab for the port cover)
  • The 4-pin 19 Volt power jack
  • An RJ11 Ethernet LN port
  • A proprietary FE DisplayPort jack

Note that the FeDP connector is a proprietary solution to connect an external secondary display with a single cable to provide power, USB for touch, and even Audio.

As far as ruggedness goes, these industrial all-in-one panel computers are not mobile devices, so there are no drop and other specs that we usually see in mobile rugged devices. The TP-5940-18 is designed to be used in a temperature range from 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and its front panel is IP65 rated. That means considerable environmental protection. The front (but not the rear) is completely protected against dust intrusion and it can also handle low-pressure water jets. Teguar lists no fewer than 30 approved cleaning agents that the display panel can be cleaned and disinfected with.

Intel "Tiger Lake" processor

"Tiger Lake" is the code name for Intel's 11th generation of Core processors. "mobile" Tiger Lake chips are found in most high-end rugged laptops and rugged tablets. We considered "Tiger Lake" a milestone in mobile processor technology — a "generation" that's particularly good, particularly solid, and unlikely to be rendered obsolete several years.

Intel's 6th generation "Skylake" was an earlier such example. Skylake was both the last generation of Core processors that still supported earlier versions of Microsoft Windows (including the beloved by many Windows 7), as well as having a microarchitecture so well conceived that it remained in use until the 11th generation. And the "Coffee Lake" 8th generation was one, too, being the first that brought quad-core processor to mobile computers -- a big step forward.

But it was the "Tiger Lake" 11th generation that (so far) trumped them all with the first new microarchitecture since Skylake, the long awaited switch to 10nm process technology, scalable thermal design power, Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics, Thunderbolt 4 support, and more. There was something else that made Tiger Lake special — for the first time ever, Intel allowed manufacturers to "tune" processors to optimally match their hardware as well as the requirements of their target customers.

Whereas prior to the 11th generation, mobile Core processors were delivered with a set default TDP — Thermal Design Power — and could only be tweaked via the Power Plans in the OS, "Tiger Lake" allowed OEMs to create power plans with lower or higher TDP with Intel's Dynamic Tuning Technology. No longer was the thermal envelope of a processor a fixed given. It was now possible to match the processor's behavior to device design and customers' typical work flows.

But Teguar's All-in-One computers aren't mobile systems. What makes "Tiger Lake" a good match for them? There are several reasons. First, Tiger Lake brings the same high, general-purpose performance to industrial All-in-Ones that is available in premier rugged tablets and laptops without needing a fan. Because big All-in-Ones have plenty enough mass to passively cool those chips without needing a fan.

There's nothing inherently wrong with cooling fans. But they are noisy, the create potentially unwanted airflow, they draw in dust that can lead to clogging, and, like any moving mechanical part, fans are potential points of failure, especially in 24/7/365 applications.

Second, Dynamic Tuning Technology allows manufacturers to create running modes that are precisely tuned to deployment scenarios. In mobile systems, that generally means a mode for plugged-in and one for running on battery. In industrial All-in-Ones there may be modes for different kinds of running scenarios.

To provide an idea of the relative performance of the TP-5940-18, we ran the system through the full roster of our standard benchmark suites. For comparison we added the results of the Intel Celeron-powered TP-3840-22, and also those of three other Teguar products running on Intel Core, Pentium and Celeron CPUs. Here are the results:

Sometimes numbers say more than a thousand words, and the story told by our extensive benchmark testing is an example for that. One can argue about whether the extra cost of a high end processor is justifiable or even a great deal, or why saving money by going with lower-end processor technology makes perfect sense. But that's all relative unless one has number to back it all up.

What the numbers tell here is the raw performance difference between the default processors of two otherwise almost identical lines of industrial All-in-One computers, the Teguar TP-4840 line running on Intel's "Elkhart Lake" Celeron J6412 and the Teguar TP-5940 line that uses the Intel "Tiger Lake" Core i5-1145G7.In terms of what Intel charges for those two chips in quantity, though both chips are quad-core designs, the Tiger Lake processor costs almost five times as much as the Elkhart Lake CPU. How that translates into the cost of the systems in both lines depends on which model is chosen and how it is equipped and configured.

Now look at the numbers in the two green columns of the table above. In the overall results of all of the major benchmarks we used, the Intel Core-based system is twice as fast as the Intel Celeron-based system. In an industry where 10-15% performance improvements are celebrated as great achievements, twice as fast is major. So if a customer needs beefy performance from an industrial system of the kind that these two Teguar lines represent, the choice is clear -- A TP-5940 model will outperform a TP-4840 model, by a lot.

Does that disqualify the TP-4840 line with its lower-end Celeron chip? If maximum performance is needed, probably. But the majority of industrial All-in-One deployments do not require maximum performance. For the typical panel computer applications — information lookups, human-machine interfaces, kiosks, signage, etc — the Elkhart Celeron chip offers plenty enough performance. Just look at how far Intel's "Atom" architecture-based chips have come in the last few years by comparing the TP-4840 benchmark numbers with those of systems with older Celeron and Pentium chips.

What it boils down to is that Teguar offers a very reasonable choice: Two lines of industrial All-in-One computers that look essentially the same, but each is designed, inside, for a different class of applications.

Teguar TP-4840 and TP-5940 Series All-in-One — Summary

With their fanless TP-4840 (currently available with 10, 16, 18 and 22 inch screens) and TP-5940 (currently available with 16, 18 and 22 inch screens) Series of All-in-One computers, Teguar offers two lines of multifunctional industrial touch panel PCs that are near identical in most respects, but fundamentally differ in the choice of processor.

While the TP-4840 line is powered by the economical quad-core "Elkhart Lake" Intel Celeron J6412 processor specifically designed by Intel for "edge computing" applications, the TP-5940 line is based on the high-performance Intel Core i5-1145G7 chip. Broadly speaking, the former is optimized for routine, dedicated applications with predictable and unchanging performance requirements, whereas the latter offers substantially higher performance in line with what one would expect from a high-performance laptop computer.

Equipped with very responsive projected capacitive touch, both Series offer a wealth of onboard legacy and state-of-the-art connectivity. In addition, Teguar provides a variety of productivity options such as scanning, RFID, SmartCard, and camera. Dye-cast aluminum design makes for very solid, durable construction, and the all glass front provides a clean, elegant, contemporary look.

What separates the two lines is processing performance. The Intel Celeron-based TP-4840 models can easily handle the vast majority of typical panel applications, while the Intel Core-based TP-5940 models provide twice the performance for demanding applications. — Conrad H.
