Janam is a New York-based rugged mobile computing vendor with worldwide distribution. The company was established in 2006 as a provider of purpose-built rugged handheld computing devices for mobile workers. Today, Janam is also the leading provider of ticket-reading scanners in live entertainment. A primary example of both the company's quick response to emerging needs as well as innovative concepts and solution is the Janam GT1 Mobile Entry Pedestal.
What is the Janam GT1?
What is the Janam GT1? It is Janam's answer to the mounting demand for self-scanning ticketing technology. The company points out that whether attending a live event, boarding a plane, getting on a subway, picking up a prescription or checking in at a facility, quick and simple check-in or access control goes a long way towards a satisfying, hassle-free experience. And a hassle-free experience makes for happy customers. Add Covid-19 related distancing and contact-free authentication requirements, and the case for self-scanning becomes stronger yet.
A challenge to economical self-scanning systems has always been the sheer multitude of different codes, formats and technologies. There's an endless variety of barcode symbologies and RFID tags that may be on and in tickets, wristbands, cards and other, and access and transaction technologies now also include smartphone-based systems such as Apple Wallet, Google Pay and others.
To handle all that, what Janam did with the GT1 is create a versatile, configurable system that can (almost) do it all. That's because the GT1 isn't a proprietary design for one company or one task. Instead it's as close to an open system as an access control setup can get. That's because Janam's popular XT2+ and XT3 Android-based rugged touch computers are the electronic heart of the GT1 that integrates the computers and their inherent backend network connectivity into a compact, full-featured mobile pedestal. The result is a modular and highly flexible entry system for both indoor and select outdoor environments.
How does it work?
How does it work and what can the GT1 do? It works by putting the Janam computers' inherent data scanning technologies to work in the GT1 setup with its complementing reading features and ergonomic, user-friendly design. For barcode scanning, one simply places the printed ticket or the on-screen code in the marked area on the GT1 to get a quick read.
For RFID/NFC based access, Janam says their XT handhelds are the only rugged mobile computers to support both Enhanced Contactless Polling (ECP) for Apple Wallet and Smart Tap for Google Pay. That means users simply tap their iPhone, Apple Watch or Android smartphone and the integrated proximity-based NFC system automatically picks the appropriate pass. This simplifies self-credentialing and makes it much quicker to pass through sports, entertainment, healthcare, travel, retail and hospitality checkpoints. The system integrates with virtually all third-party ticketing software. Bright LED lights and audio cues indicate the credential status both for the user as well as gate staff that may provide assistance to multiple GT1 units.
Physically, the GT1 Mobile Entry Pedestal is 54 inches tall and weighs about 50 pounds. GT1 units can easily be customized with paint, wraps decals as well as customized screen graphics and LED illumination. A large-capacity battery provides more than 24 hours of operating time, and snap-on wheels make for easy transport or relocation. One size/type rarely fits all, and so Janam indicated the GT1 technology will also become available in form factors other than the initial pedestal.
The computer inside
As far as the Janam XT2+ and XT3 rugged handhelds used in the GT1 mobile entry pedestals, these are ultra-rugged field-proven handheld Android touch computers with bright 5-inch displays protected by Gorilla Glass. They are dust- and waterproof and as quick and responsive as modern smartphones. The XT2+ and XT3 are largely identical, with the XT3 being a more powerful and technologically enhanced version.
