Janam GT2 Temperature Sensing Kiosk

Contactless thermal imaging and face recognition station for access control
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

Janam is a New York-based rugged mobile computing vendor with worldwide distribution. The company was established in 2006 as a provider of purpose-built rugged handheld computing devices for mobile workers. Today, Janam is also the leading provider of contactless acces management systems. A primary example of both the company's quick response to emerging needs as well as innovative concepts and solution is the Janam GT2 Temperature Sensing Kiosk.

What is the Janam GT2?

The Janam GT2 is the company's response to the global need for extended access control systems. For health reasons those now often include temperature sensing or enforcement of compliance with mask wearing mandates. Such systems can be costly, especially with ever-changing rules and deployment requirements. Janam points out that its GT2 system is priced thousands of dollars less than other solutions of its kind, delivering advanced infrared thermal imaging and mask detection technology to contactless access control solutions that comply with guidelines in effect, or coming into effect, by disease control and prevention agencies around the world.

Its low cost and simplicity makes the Janam GT2 suitable for a large variety of deployments, including sports and live entertainment venues, airports, health care facilities, retail establishments, restaurants, office buildings, lodging, schools and any other organization or entity that seeks to, or is mandated to, check body temperature and confirm the identity of individuals entering their facilities. Designed as a first line of defense against COVID-19 and other contagions, the Janam GT2 system can screen an individuals' temperatures in under a second and from up to 20 inches away, no physical contact required at all.

What does the Janam GT2 system consist of? It is, in essence, a specially designed and specially configured Android device with a 7.4-inch display, a footprint of 4.75 by 10 inches and a weight about two pounds. This base unit can, depending on customer and deployment requirements, be gate-mounted or wall-mounted. The base unit uses external power.

How does the Janam GT2 work?

Designed as a contactless access system, the GT2 uses an industrial-grade thermal sensor that can detect heat sources from up to five feet away within a 90 degree field of view, and then determines an accurate temperature reading as an individual gets closer. Temperature alerts can be set to pertaining requirements, and the temperature measurement range can be configured so as to dismiss extraneous heat sources. Scanning accuracy is +/- 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Upon scanning, a person's temperature is shown on the display. If it exceeds the threshold, there will be voice and audible alerts.

If required, the Janam GT2 can also do facial recognition, using biometrics to recognize faces in under a second and with over 99% accuracy. The technology can also detect the absence of a mask and alert to that.

The purpose of the system is contactless access management without any physical contact and without gate personnel at every station (think supermarket self-checkout where multiple check-out stations require just one support staff). The system can be configured to grant access to all who pass the temperature scan, or it can be set to only allow access to employees or other listed individuals. A station can store up to 30,000 face records.

Are there limitations? Some. The GT2 is designed for indoor use only, within operating temperatures between 60 and about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. And the GT1, of course, is not a a medical device; it simply alerts to body temperature readings above a set limit. Elevated body temperature must be independently confirmed with alternate evaluation methods.

Bottomline

What Janam offers with the GT2 Temperature Sensing Kiosk is another timely solution that addresses efficient, economical access control and self-identification, as well as meeting distancing and contact-free access requirements. It represents a simple, versatile design that is based on industry-standard Android hardware/software and has a very wide range of applications. Conrad Blickenstorfer, January 2022
