RuggedPCReview.com to add display luminance testing The rapidly growing use of mobile computers in the field makes outdoor and sunlight viewability ever more important. A good outdoor viewable display must have many qualities. Among the most important is luminance, the intensity of light emitted from a surface per unit area. It's commonly measured in "nits," which is display-industry slang for "candela per meter squared." Getac Technology first half 2018 sales up, buoyed by rugged PCs According to DigiTimes, Getac Technology is optimistic about its performance in the second half of 2018, and expects to post a double-digit revenue growth for the whole year thanks to brisk demand for rugged PCs and automotive components, according to company chairman James Hwang. Getac had consolidated revenues of US$370 million for the first half of 2018, up 11.45% on year. In the first half of 2018, the ratio of revenues from sales of rugged computers surged to 48% from 42% in 2017, serving as a major revenue growth driver for the period. Zebra reports Q2 2018 financial results Zebra Technologies reported sales of US$1,012 million for Q2, 2018, up from US$896 million a year ago. Operating income for Q2 2018 was US$125 million, up from US$58 million for Q2 2017. “Our second quarter results were driven by strong growth from our product and service offerings and disciplined operational execution. Sales and earnings results exceeded our previously communicated guidance ranges and strong free cash flow allowed us to reduce our net debt leverage ratio to 2.5x,” said Anders Gustafsson, chief executive officer of Zebra Technologies. Trimble reports Q2 2018 financial results Trimble reported sales of US$785.5 million for Q2, 2018, up from US$659.9 million a year ago. GAAP operating income for Q2 2018 was US$89.5 million, up from US$59 million for Q2 2017. "The second quarter revenue and income exceeded our expectations and continued the strong momentum that we have seen during the last year in all segments," said Steven W. Global tablet shipments to hit 40 million units in 3Q18 According to DigiTimes, global tablet shipments are expected to hit the level of 40 million units in the third quarter of 2018, up from 37.08 million units in the second quarter. Global tablet shipments for the whole 2018 are forecast to reach 150 million units, down 4-5% on year. Motorola Solutions reports Q2 2018 financial results Motorola Solutions reported sales of US$1.760 billion for Q2, 2018, up 18% from US$1.497 billion a year ago. 2Q18 worldwide smartphone sales stagnating According to IDC, 342 million smartphones were shipped worldwide in 2Q18, down from 348 million 2Q17. In terms of marketshare, Samsung led with 71.5 million, then Huawei with 54.2 million, Apple with 41.3 million, then Xiaomi (31.9 million) and Oppo (29.4million).
