GETAC P470

Handy, rugged business-class notebook
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The GETAC P470, introduced in mid-2007, is a Core 2 Duo-based ruggedized business-class notebook with a 14.1" wide screen. Available with a dedicated graphics processor, it is fast enough to be used for all standard computing tasks and durable enough to survive use outside of the office.

Weighing just 6.4 pounds, the magnesium alloy-bodied P470 can be ordered with a sunlight-viewable display and also with a touch screen. It is exceptionally flexible for a ruggedized notebook thanks to a media bay that can accommodate either one of various optical drive options, a second hard disk, an additional battery for extended operation, or even a customized I/O port.

The P470 also has an integrated 1.3 megapixel camera for video conferencing or instant recording in certain field applications. For expansion the unit can accommodate a PC Card Type II, a 34/54mm Express card and both MemoryStick and SD cards via a multi-format card reader. There is also a Smart Card reader for access security.

Like most business-class notebooks, the P470 is exceptionally well connected. There are three USB ports, FireWire, a legacy serial port, video and audio, Gigabit Lan, modem, and a docking port.

For wireless communication, the machine comes with the Intel/PRO Wireless 3945ABG module. GPS with internal antenna, verson 2.0 Bluetooth, and a variety of wide area network radios from most major carriers are optionally available.

Security is addressed via the Smart Card reader, a fingerprint scanner, a TPM 1.2 module, various security software modules, and a slot for the simple but effective Kensington lock.

The P470 offers extras that other just don't have. I mentioned the integrated camera. There is also optional LED lighting, the microphone array has both echo and noise cancellation, and the fact this is a rugged machine made by one of the most experienced and respected names in the business.
